Auto Maintenance And Repair: Protecting Your Investment

It's no secret that economic times are tough right now. You might think you're saving money by neglecting that oil change or delaying that tire rotation, but this couldn't be further from the truth. Neglecting the maintenance and repair on your vehicle is a sure way to end up spending even more money in the future. Play it safe and follow the manufacturer's recommendation for tune-ups and inspections, and if you're not sure which parts of your car need frequent attention, follow these tips:

Have the Oil Changed Regularly

Back in the day, car manufacturers recommended an oil change ever 3,000 miles, but that's no longer the case. If you drive a newer model vehicle, you may be able to go a whopping 7,000 miles between oil changes. This varies by make and model, of course, so read your car's manual to get the facts. Whatever the maker recommends, you should follow. Skipping oil changes causes unnecessary wear and tear on your car's engine parts. And engine repair is almost always a costly proposition.

Address Your Tires

The condition of your car's tires is a huge safety concern. Your tires affect the way your vehicle steers and stops. It's also a determining factor in how well it adheres to the road. It's important to keep your tires inflated to the recommended pressure. It's also important to have them balanced and rotated periodically. Your owner's manual will give you the best estimate, but if it's gone missing, a tire rotation should occur about ever 6,000 miles or so. You'll also want to invest in alignments when your auto repair shop recommends them. This helps your tires from becoming worn out before their time.

Pay Attention to the Brakes, Rotors, and Drums

Typically, most brakes will last at least 20,000 miles. But if yours are squealing, grinding, or vibrating, it's time for a trip to the shop. Worn or damaged brake pads can cause drum and rotor damage if left unchecked. This not only makes for unsafe driving, it costs much more to fix.

Keeping up the maintenance on your vehicle is one of the best investments you can make as a car owner. Regardless of which make or model you drive, regularly scheduled service calls, fluid checks, and preventive care help increase your car's trade-in value. It also ensures that your car will be there for you when you need it to be.
