4 Warning Signs That Your Transmission Is Going Out

Your transmission helps fuel your vehicle and push it down the road. It allows you to get to where you need to go. It's important to know when you need to get it fixed. There are some signs that your transmission is failing.

1. Burning Smell

When you drive your vehicle, you shouldn't notice any strange odors. If you notice a burning smell when you are driving, that is a serious warning sign, and you should head straight to an auto repair shop. A burning smell could mean that the transmission fluid is old and burnt and does not provide your vehicle with the lubrication it needs to drive safely. Or it could mean that your transmission is actively overheating, which is not good for your engine or your transmission.

2. Sounds When You Are in Neutral

When you are in neutral, you shouldn't hear anything from your vehicle. If you are hearing sounds from your vehicle when it is neutral, that is not normal. Your vehicle should be quiet. If you hear sounds when in neutral, that is generally a sign that you need to take your vehicle to the auto repair shop and have the transmission fluid flushed. The technician will drain out all the old fluid, put new fluid in to clean out the system, drain that out, and then put another round of new fluid in. This will clean out your transmission and give you the fuel you need to get on the road.

3. Leaking Fluid

Fluid leaking from your vehicle is never a good sign. If the fluid leaking from your vehicle is red and has a sweet smell to it, then you have transmission fluid leaking out of your vehicle. You don't want to be leaking out transmission fluid; your engine needs that to stay cool. Get to the mechanic right away, and have them find the leak and repair it. There may be a hose or sealant that needs to be replaced, or you may be in need of a more major repair, such as your radiator needs to be replaced.

4. Strange Sounds

Anytime your vehicle starts to make sounds that it wasn't making before, you are going to want to get an auto technician to investigate the sound and figure out what it is. Strange sounds should be taken seriously and are something you need to investigate. If you notice clunking, whining, or humming sounds, get your vehicle to an auto repair shop.

When your transmission starts to sound off, and gives you the warning signs above, get the issues causing those warning signs fixed before more damage occurs. The sooner you fix it, the better off you will be.

About Me
what to car sounds mean?

I have an older car that is constantly in the shop. Yes, this car does cost me a bit each year to keep on the road, but what I pay in repairs is much less than what I would pay to buy a new car. I have learned a lot over the years of driving this car. I have found out what just about any sound means and what it takes to make those repairs. If your car is making a funny noise or two, take a minute to read through my blog. You might find that I have already experienced that sound and have provided you a solution to the problem.
